With the growing use of mobile phones and electronic devices, Dark circles under the eyelids are also becoming a common sight amongst men and women. Often accompanied by puffiness, dark circles make one appear older than they actually are. To make the matter even worst, they can be difficult to get rid of as well.
Though dark circles can affect anyone, it can be commonly sighted amongst 2 types of the crowd,
The ones with the darker skin tones.
Let’s know about some of the causes of dark circles:
There are various contributing factors for dark circles and some common causes are listed below:
Oversleeping: Excess of fatigue, or just staying awake a few hours past your normal bedtime can cause dark circles and puffiness to form under your eyes. Sleep deprivation causes your skin to become dull and look pale, allowing the dark tissues and blood vessels beneath your skin to appear. Lack of sleep causes fluid to build underneath your eyes, again causing them to appear puffy. The dark circles that show up might actually be shadows cast by your puffy eyelids as well.
Age: Natural aging is one of the common cause of those dark circles that appears beneath your eyes. As you get older, your skin becomes thinner as it loses fat and collagen which is needed to maintain your skin’s elasticity. As a result, the blood vessels beneath your skin become more visible which darkens the area below your eyes.
Eye strain: Staring at the idiot box or the display screen can cause a significant amount of strain on your eyes. This strain again causes blood vessels around your eyes to enlarge and darken. As a result, the skin surrounding your eyes becomes darker.
Allergies: Allergic reactions and eye dryness also trigger dark circles. When you are allergic to some things, your body release toxins as a response to the allergy-causing harmful bacteria. While causing uncomfortable symptoms including itchiness, redness, and puffy eyes, they also cause your blood vessels to dilate and the dark circles become more visible beneath your skin. Allergies also increase the urge to rub and scratch the affected itchy skin part around your eyes. These actions only worsen your symptoms, causing inflammation, swelling, and broken blood vessels which in result darkens the skin.
Dehydration: Dehydration is again one of the most common causes of dark circles under the eyes. When the body is not receiving the appropriate amount of water, the skin underneath your eyes begins to look pale, darken and your eyes look sunken. This is due to the close proximity to the underlying bone of the skull.
Sun overexposure: Overexposure to the sun also causes the body to produce an excess of melanin, the pigment which provides the human skin with color. Too much sun, particularly for your eyes cause pigmentation in the surrounding skin areas to darken.
Genetics: Your Family history also plays a part in the process of developing dark circles under the eyes. This inherited trait can be seen as early as in childhood, and the situation may worsen as you age. Tendencies to other medical conditions like thyroid disease can also result in the formation of dark circles beneath the eyes.
The makeup could be the irritating one: It seems contradictory that makeup which is supposed to cover up those dark circles can be causing it too. If you’re using a beauty product, whether it’s a mascara, eyeshadow, or even eye concealer, their ingredients can bug your skin, it could be leading to worsened dark circles. Reports say some people develop allergic reactions post-makeup. They get dark circles from the irritation, rubbing, and scratching.
Whenever you spot those pesky dark circles around your eyes, the reason might be your lack of sleep or any other medical or skin condition. Getting a decent amount of shut-eye is significantly important.
Take care of your eyes as they are the Window that helps you see the vibrant colors of life.
